In what became a very controversial public voting poll, it was Abbey Eison of Jefferson who set a record for votes (17,147) as Dragon Nation’s fingers were burning with voting. The top girl vote-getter and top boy were both named Fan Vote POWs, as Union’s Brian Smith (1,168) earned the honors also. BLITZ picked Dawson’s Molly Muenchen following a record-setting week.
VOTING CONTROVERSY: Eison was ahead with roughly 15,000 total votes late Tuesday night, and leading Stephens’ Maryann Lytle by about 4-5 thousand. BLITZ’s voting poll software experienced suspicious overnight activity to the tune of some 20,000 votes between midnight and 5 am to push Lytle to 28,341 votes. The poll was closed early, and a dive into the IP Analysis showed over 14,000 votes flooded through a BOT system (thus invalid voting activity) and were flagged by the software. For reference, no one has ever eclipsed 16,000 votes in any Player of the Week poll for BLITZ, until Eison’s 17,147. A first offense for voting infractions results in a simple retraction of all flagged/suspicious voting tallies. Second offense and thereafter in the same year by that school results in an automatic disqualification for that player in that particular poll. In this instance, Lytle’s total (28,341) was subtracted by 14,133, bringing her true voting tally to 14,208. Still a very good showing, but just 2,939 behind Eison for the Fan Vote for top girl.
ABBEY EISON – FAN VOTE
Abbey Eison has put herself on the map with a solid season so far, especially as of late. The freshman forward notched 5 goals and an assist in the last 5 games for powerhouse Jefferson, which has won 4 of those 5 contests.
Jefferson is state-ranked at #7 in the latest poll in Class 3A, and Eison’s 17 goals and 5 assists on the season are a large reason why the region runner-up Lady Dragons should make a deep playoff run in 2019.
BRIAN SMITH – FAN VOTE
Union County’s top scorer Brian Smith has been making a splash as of late. The senior forward has found the back of the net 8 times in the past 3 games, and added an assist.
This includes a 4-goal clinic in a 5-2 win over Gilmer, a 2-goal, 1-assist game versus Monticello in another win, and a 2-goal performance in a 2-1 win over White County.
Smith leads the Panthers with 16 goals and 3 assists on the season, and has the boys on a 6-game win streak. Though holding a 9-4 overall record, Union will be the 4-seed out of a tough 8-AA field, making it likely the toughest 4-seed in the 2A bracket.
MOLLY MUENCHEN – BLITZ PICK
Dawson County has had so many stellar players run through its soccer program the last ten years. The latest one is Molly Muenchen. The sophomore earns her second Player of the Week award this year after another solid week. The sophomore posted 5 goals in her last 2 games, giving her 57 for her career.
That mark gave her the career goals record for a program that has had some impressive strikers, including teammate Rachel Rajczak and alums like Taylor Bennett, Tina Libao, and Mackenzie Callas to name a few. The scary thing is that Muenchen is just a sophomore, and potentially could put this record so far out of reach that it’ll stand for ages.
Muenchen has helped guide the Lady Tigers to a #2 state ranking, a 12-1-1 overall record, and a 7-AAA Region Title!
