On Friday night, 11 local teams played in the region finals or semifinals.
STEPHENS COUNTY (BOYS)
The #2-seed Indians took on top-seeded St. Pius in the 8-AAAA Championship game. Stephens County fell 77-51, but by making it to the title game the Indians already stamped a home state playoff game.
DAWSON COUNTY (BOYS)
The #2-seed Tigers took on #6 Lumpkin in the semifinals and cruised to 86-53 win. Luke Chism flirted with a triple-double of 23 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists, and added 5 blocks. Adkins added 16 points, while Campbell Reed had 15. Jasper Gibson had 12 points and 8 assists. Dawson will play at home in the first round of the state playoffs, but now sets its sights on Saturday’s Region Championship game against powerhouse GAC at 7:30 PM.
DAWSON COUNTY (GIRLS)
The #2-seed Lady Tigers had all it could handle against #3 North Hall, who shot the lights out, leading to a 71-43 Dawson loss. Kaylee Sticker led the girls with 17, Sophia D’Oliveira had 12, and Marlie Townley 9. Dawson plays in the consolation game on Saturday at 3 PM against #5-seed Cherokee Bluff.
LUMPKIN COUNTY (BOYS)
The Indians surprised many by securing a state playoff trip with a shocking win over #3-seed North Hall. The #6-seed Indians fell to Dawson in the semifinals, 86-53. Lumpkin will play in the consolation game on Saturday at 4:30 PM to determine if it will be a three or four seed in the state tournament.
RABUN COUNTY (GIRLS)
Top-seeded Rabun County throttled #6-seed Elbert County, 66-46 for the 8-AA Region Championship. The Lady Cats fell behind early and held a slim halftime lead before pulling away late. Rabun will be guaranteed home court for the first two games of the state tournament barring any shocking upset loss. The girls have now won 24 in a row.
RABUN COUNTY (BOYS)
The #6-seed surprise Wildcats fell to #4 Union, 57-37. Rabun will be a 4-seed in the upcoming state tournament.
BANKS COUNTY (BOYS)
The #2-seed Leopards battled hard, but fell short in a 63-51 loss to top-seeded Elbert in the 8-AA Region title game. The Leopards were led by Carl Cleveland’s 30 points, as Dakota Orr added 8 points and 8 rebounds. Banks will still have a first round home game for the state playoffs.
BANKS COUNTY (GIRLS)
After a disappointing loss to Elbert on Thursday, the Lady Leopards rebounded with a 63-40 win over Monticello in the consolation game to claim the #3 seed for the state tournament. Amber Williams had 17 points, Jaycie Bowen had 13, and Pollie Simpson and Heather Vaughan had 9 and 8 points, respectively.
UNION COUNTY (BOYS)
#4-seed Union duked it out with #6 Rabun in the consolation game, coming up with a 57-37 win to claim the #3 seed in the state tournament.
The #5-seed Lady Tigers fell to #1 Lakeview, 61-34 in the 8-A semifinals. The girls are 21st in the 1A public Power Ratings, meaning they will have a spot in the state tourney.
TALLULAH FALLS (GIRLS)
The #6-seed Lady Indians fell to #2 Prince Avenue in the semifinals, 48-42. Like Commerce, Tallulah Falls sits 12th in the 1A Private Power Ratings, meaning they have a spot in the state tournament waiting for them.
