Despite being down double-digits on multiple occasions, Rabun County stormed back and hit a last-second three-pointer by Laken Stiles to beat Banks County on Saturday night, 61-58.
The #8 Lady Wildcats (6-1; 2-0) remained unbeaten in Region 8-AA with the win. The #4-ranked Lady Leopards (7-2; 0-2) dropped back-to-back contests to open region play by a combined five points.
Rabun jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead, but the Lady Leopards, behind the hot shooting of junior guard Heather Vaughan, used a 9-1 run to end the quarter tied at 13. Vaughan, who posted a game-high 26 points including six 3-pointers, had 20 in the first half.
The Lady Leopards outscored Rabun 22-8 in the second quarter, making it a 35-21 game at the break. The visitors kicked into a new gear out of the break, holding Vaughan to just six points in the second half. By the end of the third, it was a 42-36 game in favor of Banks.
Two quick buckets by Banks to open the fourth pushed the lead back up to 50-38, but Rabun finished the game with a flurry of 25 points, including a 20-8 run to tie the game at 58 with 1:05 left with two Georgia Stockton free throws.
With the ball and tied up with about 54 seconds to play, Rabun worked the ball around and held for the last shot. Stockton found Stiles in the corner for a triple with four seconds left for the win.
Stiles led Rabun with 16 points, while Brooke Henricks added 15, Stockton 12, and Destiny Deetz 11 points. Vaughan’s game-high 26 led the Lady Leopards, while Jaycie Bowen added seven, and Lanya Parson and Kennedy Smith chipped in with six each. Amber Williams and Kailynn Gilstrap both had five as well.
