Lumpkin County showed up for the voting in the first Fan Vote Player of the Week of the 2018-19 basketball season. The top boy and girl in voting both came from Lumpkin, as junior Patrick Jackson and sophomore Isabel Davenport earned the honors. BLITZ picks for both boys and girls were Dawson senior Luke Chism and Banks junior Heather Vaughan, respectively.
Jackson led all vote-getters with 2,730, followed by Davenport’s 2,036. Third-place also was a Lumpkin player, Mackenzie Pulley (906).
Jackson is leading the Lumpkin County Indians early in scoring, averaging 23 points per contest in the first two games. The junior guard dropped 23 against Chestatee and another 23 against Flowery Branch.
Davenport had a breakout year as a freshman last year, and is off to another hot start in 2018-19. The guard has averaged 20 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2.7 steals per game over the first three contests, all wins.
The sophomore is hitting on 55% of her long-distance buckets as well.
Chism we knew was poised for a monster year for Dawson County after coming over from Dawson Christian Academy. The highly-recruited preseason all-state forward is off to a blistering start for the Tigers.
After opening the season with a 16-point, 6-rebound performance in a win over Flowery Branch, Chism put up one of the best games you’d see in a win against Landmark Christian. He went for 24 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals, and 3 blocks. In his third game, a loss to Cumberland, Chism put up 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists.
In the three contests, that comes out to 21.7 points per game and 7.7 boards.
Vaughan, a junior transfer from Habersham Central, led the Banks County Lady Leopards to a quick start. She averaged 17 points, 4 rebounds, 6 steals, and 2 assists per game, as well as connecting on 44% of her 3-pointers.
