For the Wildcats, the 68-7 win at Banks County on Friday night eclipsed the school record of 65 set in 2016, and the 61-point margin was tied for the second best in Rabun County history.
Going back in the records to 1949, Rabun County has had only 28 games with 50-plus points. Here’s a breakdown of 50-point games by decade:
- 1950s: 1
- 1960s: 0
- 1970s: 5
- 1980s: 0
- 1990s: 3
- 2000s: 0
- 2010s: 19
In the Lee Shaw era at Rabun County (2012-present), he is responsible for the 19 50-plus point performances (two in playoff games), which is over twice the number accumulated in the previous 60-plus years.
Consider this: Of the 28 50-point games, only nine of those have been 60 or more. Here are those occurrences:
1970: 64-4 vs Union County- 1977: 61-0 vs Dawson County
- 2013: 64-0 vs Social Circle
- 2013: 63-7 vs Riverside Military
- 2015: 60-12 vs Oglethorpe
- 2016: 65-7 vs Social Circle
- 2017: 62-21 vs Mt. Pisgah
- 2017: 63-7 vs Social Circle
- 2018: 68-7 vs Banks County
The only game with a higher margin of victory than the 68-7 win Friday was a 64-0 win in 2013 over Social Circle. A 1977 61-0 win over Dawson County tied with last night’s margin.
To think, Rabun missed a field goal in the third quarter, and also turned the ball over on downs in the red zone later in the quarter. And Banks County’s TD came on the final play from scrimmage. So it very well could have been a 79-0 win or somewhere in that range.
Coach Shaw’s legacy will be known for much more than his high-scoring offenses, but it’s worth noting that he has now coached 33 games of 50 or more points on offense, and 10 times 60 or more. Here’s the breakdown for such games for Shaw:
- Rabun County (2012-Present): 19 50+ pts; 7 60+ pts
- Flowery Branch (2002-11): 14 50+ pts; 3 60+ pts
Of his three 60-point games at Flowery Branch, he didn’t have a margin of victory better than the win over Banks Friday night. However, his career-high in terms of offensive output came in a 2009 win over East Hall, with his younger son Connor Shaw orchestrating a 69-16 win.
