Game of the Week Preview: Dawson seeks to remain unbeaten in region play

SBT Team online ad FOOTBALL

Week 10 marks the final game of the 2017 regular season for a couple of teams (Chestatee & North Hall), but for most, we still have this week and next. What better place to be than Dahlonega for a long-time rivalry matchup between neighboring counties – Dawson County at Lumpkin County! With nearly 1,000 votes, you — our fans — picked Lumpkin/Dawson as our Game of the Week. White County vs West Hall was a close second, falling just 40 votes shy.

The Tigers (6-2; 4-0) are undefeated in Region 7-AAA, while the Indians (1-7; 1-3) are coming off their first win of the season. This historic matchup dates back to 1968, and a Dawson win not only evens the all-time series (currently 19-18-2 in favor of Lumpkin), but gives the Tigers a region championship matchup for Week 11 at #1 GAC.

Our Prediction: Coey Watson & Sevaughn Clark do Coey Watson & Sevaughn Clark things…in other words, they dominate at Lumpkin County.

WEEK 0 – Chestatee vs North Hall
WEEK 1 – #5 Rabun vs #9 Mt. Pisgah
WEEK 2 – Habersham Central vs White
WEEK 3 – White vs #3 Rabun
WEEK 4 – Habersham Central vs Stephens
WEEK 5 – Habersham Central vs Chestatee
WEEK 6 – Dawson vs North Hall
WEEK 7 – Gainesville vs Habersham Central
WEEK 8 – North Hall vs Union
WEEK 9 – #3 Rabun vs #10 Elbert

Here’s everything you need to know for Week 10:

TIME: 7:30 pm kickoff
PLACE: The Burial Grounds (Lumpkin County High School/Dahlonega, GA)
LAST MEETING: Dawson won 54-8 in 2016
ALL-TIME RECORD: Lumpkin County 19, Dawson County 18, 2 Ties
RECORDS: Lumpkin County (1-7; 1-3); Dawson County (6-2; 4-0)

Long-time bitter rivals, Lumpkin leads the all-time series 19-8-2 over Dawson, but it’s been complete Tiger domination the last two meetings, as Dawson has won by a combined score of 95-8 (54-8 in 2016; 41-0 in 2015). In a rivalry that dates back to 1968, Lumpkin won the first nine from ’68 to ’82 when the game was played. Dawson has had the upper hand in recent memory, winning two in a row, 10 of the last 14 and 7 of the last 9 matchups.
