1,000 points is a lot! For a 4-year starter, that would mean averaging 250 points per season, or around 10-15 points per game. Typically, 1,000-point scorers break out as sophomores and rack up their points for the last 3 years. At any rate, how you get there doesn’t matter. It’s getting there at all which is a dream for many players. Last night, January 16, four local players all hit the mark, which is remarkable.

For starters, Dawson County had quite the night. Abby Slaton, despite a home loss to Wesleyan, eclipsed 1,000 career points. She was sitting at 999 when an inbounds play found her with an open corner 3-pointer. She drained it to reach the milestone. Later that evening, Dawson County got a double dose. Caden Reed also hit a corner bucket from downtown to reach the mark in the win over Wesleyan. In the same game, Trey Harvey, himself over 1,000 points, reached the 500 rebound mark in the same night.

Elsewhere, Towns County’s Zane Floyd guided the Indians to a thrilling 78-77 win over Greene County. He had 26 points in the victory, moving past 1,000 career points. And that’s not all. Banks County notched a HUGE win over Providence Christian, and senior guard Addison Hoard had 12 points, including her 1,000th of her career.

So far in 2023-24, there are now 13 active players with 1,000 career points in our area. Kyia Barrett (Habersham Central) reached the milestone just a couple of weeks ago, and Ellie Southards (Rabun County) did it last week. Harvey joined the club in Dawson’s Christmas Tournament in Gatlinburg. Rabun teammate Lucy Hood reached the mark as a junior, while Lumpkin County’s Averie Jones did it by the Elite 8 of her SOPHOMORE year! She since has become the all-time leading scorer in program history.

Who’s next? Carley Segars (Banks), Brelan Sieveking (Towns), Cal Faulkner (Lumpkin), Jude Ellis, Hayden Hughes, and Houston Henry (Union), Hunter Youngblood or Aaron Scott (Banks), or Cooper Welch (Rabun). Several are getting closer with each game. We will update accordingly as each reaches the mark. *Update: Faulkner hit the mark in late January, and Welch reached the milestone on February 6. Ellis reached the milestone in the Region 8-AA title game at home on February 17. Raven Parks (Commerce) reached it in the opening round of the state playoffs.*
