
Banks County, Jefferson, Commerce, and Lumpkin County all entered the State Championship tournament in Columbus on Thursday with a real chance to win it all. Here are the day one results:


CLASS 3A
LUMPKIN COUNTY
The Lady Indians (20-13) had a lead over midway through the opening game against Franklin County, 2-0, but gave up 10 unanswered runs to fall into the loser’s bracket.

ELITE 8 GAME 1: L 2-10 vs Franklin County

JEFFERSON
The Lady Dragons (25-10) had a tough draw to open up, falling to East Hall 4-0 to fall into the loser’s bracket.

CLASS 2A
BANKS COUNTY
The Lady Leopards (29-3) opened their Columbus stay with a 6-0 blanking of Bremen. Tybee Denton homered to set a new school single-season record in the victory, while the girls combined for timely hitting and solid pitching and defense.

1A Public
COMMERCE
The Lady Tigers (23-7) opened tournament play with a noon first pitch against ECI. The result was awesome, as Commerce took a commanding 5-0 lead into the 7th. Things got a bit dicey, but the girls held on for a 5-4 victory. In the second game against Georgia Military, the girls jumped on the opposition early and often, and won easily, 9-1.
