After one game each in the 2018 GHSA State Championship Tournament, both Jefferson and Banks County found themselves advancing in the winner’s bracket and set to resume play today at 12:30 PM.

BANKS COUNTY

The Lady Leopards (27-9) could not have asked for a better start, pounding out a 7-0 win over Harlem in the opener. Remember that Harlem featured a highly-touted electric offense that Tybee Denton and Banks County shut down.

Next up for the girls, Dodge County on Friday afternoon at 12:30 PM. The game was originally slated for last night, but rain pushed all evening games to Friday.

Both Banks and Dodge (29-4) are in the winner’s bracket, with the winner advancing to play the Social Circle/Monticello winner at 7:30 PM Friday night. The Dodge/Banks loser will play at 5:45 in an elimination game. Should Banks County win, it would play either Social Circle or Monticello, both of whom are 8-AA region foes. This Elite 8 contains those three teams from 8-AA.

Dodge County features a big-time offensive threat in senior Jacey Dowdy (.403 AVG – 4 HR – 38 RBI) and fellow senior Abby Manning (.506 AVG – 2 HR – 19 RBI – 13 2B). Dowdy is also the go-to ace pitcher (19-3, 1.39 ERA, 92 K)

JEFFERSON

The Lady Dragons (28-6) earned a hard-fought 2-0 win over Cook County, shutting down an offense that averaged 8 runs per game coming in. Same as with Banks County, Jefferson will continue bracket play in the winner’s side at 12:30 PM on Friday when taking on Brantley County.

Brantley County (22-4) is fresh off a 2-1 win over powerhouse Calhoun, and have now won 18 of its last 19. The Lady Dragons though have also won 11 of their last 12 and 8 in a row after yesterday’s win. The winner plays the Frankin County/Sonoraville winner Friday at 7:30 PM, while the loser falls into an elimination game to be played at 5:45 PM.
