Five state championships…yes, five, combined by the trio of Tallulah Falls senior Anna Davis, Rabun County junior Guy Gober and Commerce senior Kate Massey.
For all three, the GHSA Track & Field State Championships took them to new heights, as all claimed state titles in their event(s) for the first time after being so close a year ago.
Davis was runner-up last year in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, as well as finishing second in area in both events. This time around, she took the top of the podium with state titles in both events, becoming the first to do so from Tallulah Falls. Davis also was fourth in the 1A state long jump event, and part of the 7th-place 4×400 team.
Gober took home the top spot in the 1600 and 3200, guiding Rabun County’s boys team to a second overall team finish. His two state titles were impressive to say the least. Gober finished fourth in both events last season, and this time improved his time by seven seconds in each event.
Massey has long been making a splash for Commerce, but she saved her best for last with a state title in the 3200 and a runner-up finish in the 1600. She was runner-up in the 3200 last year and was third a year ago in the 1600. 2018 for her marks a sweep of both events as Area Champion and the State Title in the 3200.
