In a match that has continued to be physical and have playoff seeding implications over the past four years, the Dawson County Lady Tigers have taken down Lumpkin County in a top-10 matchup for the third year in a row.
The #6-ranked Lady Tigers (8-2; 3-1 Region 7-AAA) found a way to upset #5-ranked Lumpkin County (10-3; 4-2) in a huge region match, taking a 2-1 win after PKs. The Lady Indians scored first early in the game on a Hope Kenney goal.
Dawson responded with a penalty kick goal by Rachel Rajczak later in the first half after being fouled in the box. Both defenses held the game at 1-1 throughout regulation, with stellar play between the posts by junior goalkeeper Fallon Lacey.
Overtime produced no more goals, so the game was forced into PKs. Five Dawson County players netted their respective PKs, giving the Lady Tigers a 5-3 tally in PKs, ending with a final of 2-1.
For Dawson County, the win gives it the inside track to a runner-up finish in region, which equates to a playoff game at home. Lumpkin County has two games remaining, but is finished with region games. The Lady Tigers meanwhile have two more region contests — Fannin County (9-4) and East Hall (0-10-2).
The Lady Tigers won this matchup last season, also 2-1, and in 2016 by a 3-1 margin. In Lumpkin’s historic 2015 season (Final 4 run), the Lady Indians took the victory by a 2-1 final.
